In memory of the Catalan mathematician Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer (1912-1967), his cousins Maria and Maria dels Àngels Carbona i Balaguer created the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation in 1983. The Foundation became part of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans in 1991.
Purpose
The purpose of the Foundation is to promote mathematical research by awarding a prize and providing grants for studies and research in the mathematical sciences.

Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize
The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize is awarded annually to a mathematical monograph of an expository nature, written in English, which presents the latest developments in an active area of research in Mathematics, in which advances have been produced recently. It amounts to 15.000 euros and the winning monograph is published by Birkhäuser in the “Progress in Mathematics” series.
The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Scholarships are offered annually to advanced PhD students of the universities of the Catalan-speaking countries to visit a research centre for 1 to 3 months.
Awarded to a feature on any aspect of mathematics produced by a media outlet based in the Països Catalans.
Since the 2024–2025 academic year, the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation offers partial grants to undergraduate mathematics students from universities belonging to the Lluís Vives University Network who wish to enrol in the Master’s Degree in Advanced Mathematics offered by the University of Barcelona, jointly with the Autonomous University of Barcelona, or at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
The Sunyer Collection is deposited in the Science History Section of the Sciences and Engineering Library of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and consists of
